Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor

Department of Astronomy

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

 The Astronomy Department at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign invites applications for a full-time, Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor faculty position (tenure line) beginning as soon as August 16, 2024. The area of scientific focus is open to all areas of astronomy/astrophysics/cosmology. The department is involved in several major astrophysical surveys, and has vibrant research programs that span cosmology, compact objects, galaxies, stars, planets, computational and data-intensive astronomy. We are open to diversifying these research areas. We particularly encourage applications from candidates who can contribute, through their research, teaching, and service, to furthering inclusive excellence in the Department and the Illinois community.

The Astronomy Department has strong ties to the highly-ranked departments of Physics and Chemistry, the College of Engineering, and the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA). Our campus supports crosscutting astrophysics research through the Center for AstroPhysical Surveys (CAPS) that advances astrophysical survey science efforts across campus, and the Illinois Center for Advanced Studies of the Universe (ICASU) that supports interdisciplinary inquiry in fundamental physics.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Astronomy, Astrophysics, Physics, or a closely related field. You will teach a talented, diverse population of undergraduate and graduate students, and you will develop and conduct an active research program. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications.

An email request for contact information for three professional references will be sent to Assistant Professor applicants 1-2 business days after the application is submitted. Once the contact information for the references is uploaded into the system, their letters will be invited. For Associate/Full Professor applicants, letters of reference will be collected after an initial screening.  Early application submission is encouraged to allow time for referees to submit letters of recommendation.

To ensure full consideration, all materials must be submitted by the closing date of Nov 8, 2023; letters of reference should be received no later than Nov 29, 2023 for assistant-rank applications (Dec 15, 2023 for associate/full ranks). Although early applications are appreciated and some interviews may be conducted before the closing date, all applications submitted by the closing date will receive full consideration.
